Can I take collagen after surgery?

After surgery, your vitamin C needs may be higher so consider supplementing for 1-2 weeks post-surgery. Vitamins A and D are also critical after surgery. Vitamin A supports collagen strength and is necessary for bone development, and vitamin D is important for bone health, muscle mass, and lowering inflammation.

Plastic surgeons are now recommending collagen supplements as a part of a healthy and balance post-surgery routine, in order to aid and speed recovery as well as improve overall health and wellbeing.

Collagen is the most abundant protein found naturally in the human body. It plays a vital role in supporting the body’s natural healing system and in being able to restore and repair soft tissue damage. Collagen supplements support the body’s natural production and utilization of collagen in order to promote recovery. In addition, collagen’s natural anti-inflammatory effects can also contribute to lessened swelling and pain post-surgery.

The high level of protein found in collagen supplements helps post plastic surgery patient’s muscle function in an optimal way by delivering an increased level of protein than what they may be able to produce from food intake alone. This increase in protein is documented to improve muscle strength and help minimize muscle wastage during times of low activity. For post-surgery patients, this can significantly improve wellbeing during recovery as the strength and overall health of muscles are supported beyond what the body is able to do without additional
concentrated sources of protein.

Dry Brushing

By promoting the lymphatic drainage of the body, it brings many benefits, including skin refreshment, improved immunity, improved cellulite, as well as reducing swelling. Brush your body using a natural bristle brush 10-20 minutes before going for a shower or bath.

Things you should know

Why are proteins important?

Protein can help to heal post-surgical wounds and regenerate damaged skin and muscle tissue. Additionally, protein can help reduce the swelling that’s very common after liposuction. Aim to eat food from all five food groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods, and dairy.

Foods you should avoid immediately after surgery

Salt: Sodium can cause fluid retention, prolonging any swelling or puffiness near an incision. Reduce or eliminate salt immediately following surgery to allow your body to heal and see actual results more quickly.

Sugar: Refined sugar or foods high in carbohydrates can suppress immune function and promote inflammation.

Protein

New blood cell and collagen production rely on protein. Consuming the recommended daily amount of protein will give your immune system a boost and support your central nervous system. Choose from lean fish and organic meats, eggs, seeds, nuts, and quinoa. . Other foods include red onions, broccoli, pineapples and apples, and capers to decrease swelling faster. These provide your body with essential vitamins to help you heal and fight infection.

Staying hydrated is important

While it’s always good to drink plenty of water every day, staying hydrated before and after plastic surgery is particularly helpful to the healing of your skin. drink plenty of water and add a lemon or lime slice for flavor. Staying hydrated can help reduce post-op swelling. If you’re dehydrated, your body is more likely to retain the little amount of water that it does have, resulting in swelling. When your skin is hydrated and healthy, it will promote faster healing of your wounds. Dry, tight skin will make it difficult for incisions to heal.

Healthy sources of protein include:

  • Lean meat such as chicken breast
  • Fish
  • Beans and legumes
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Whole grains
  • Leafy green vegetables
  • Red meat in moderation
  • Protein supplements, such as protein powder for shakes

When to resume exercise?

BBL: Most patients are able to resume light, low-impact exercise about 4 – 6 weeks after BBL, while more strenuous physical activities should be restricted for up to 2 – 3 months, or until cleared by your surgeon.

TUMMY TUCK: At around 7-10 weeks after your tummy tuck procedure, you should be cleared to ease into your normal exercise routine. You can begin doing crunches, sit-ups, and planks, as long as you progressively increase your repetitions. We recommend focusing on performing these exercises with impeccable form.

LIPOSUCTION: Toning exercises can be gradually increased generally from between two-to-three weeks after the operation. It is important for the body to heal first for the best surgical results. Once six weeks have passed most liposuction patients feel comfortable enough to endure strenuous exercises.
